What to Text After a First Date
Text within about 24 hours, say something specific you enjoyed, and state what you want next. If you don't want a second date, a short, kind and clear message is better than silence.

If you want to see them again
Specific detail plus an invitation. It's warm without being a paragraph, and it removes the guesswork for both of you.
- 'Really enjoyed last night — especially the debate about the pub quiz. Free next week?'
- 'That was lovely. I'd like to do it again. Thursday or Saturday?'
If you're unsure
It's completely reasonable to want more information: 'I had a nice time and I'd be up for another drink at some point.' Low pressure, honest, and leaves space for a second date to settle the question.
If you don't want a second date
'Thanks for last night — I enjoyed meeting you, but I didn't feel a romantic connection. Wishing you well.' Send it and don't over-explain. Fading is easier in the moment and worse for everyone involved.
Don't overthink the timing
The same evening or the next day are both normal. Waiting three days to appear busy is a rule from a different era and mostly reads as disinterest now.
Key takeaways
- Within 24 hours, specific detail, clear next step.
- Unsure is a valid message to send.
- A kind no beats a slow fade.
