Dating pattern

The Over-Giver

You lead with generosity. You're the one who remembers, plans, accommodates and smooths things over — often before anyone has asked you to. Your warmth is real, but it tends to arrive faster than the other person's investment, which leaves you carrying relationships that were never mutual.

What works about this pattern

  • You're genuinely warm and people feel cared for around you.
  • You're willing to be vulnerable, which is rarer than it sounds.
  • You don't play games or keep score.

What it tends to cost

  • You often invest far past the point where reciprocity stopped.
  • You soften your own requests so they're easy to ignore.
  • You find out too late that you were the only one building something.

Four shifts that help

Match, don't exceed

For four weeks, don't offer more time, effort or emotional labour than you're receiving. Not as a punishment — as a measurement.

Ask plainly instead of hinting

Replace one hint a week with a direct request. 'I'd like to see you on a weeknight too' is easy to answer; hoping they notice is not.

Keep one evening entirely yours

Protect a night that isn't available to be rearranged. It restores the sense that your week exists independently.

Let disappointment happen

You don't have to prevent every small letdown for the other person. Tolerating it is where the rebalancing actually happens.
