When Should You Have the Relationship Talk?

Have the relationship talk when the answer would change your behaviour — commonly after six to twelve weeks of consistent dating. Raise it calmly, in person if possible, as a statement of what you want rather than a demand.

The timing test

Forget rules about specific week counts. Ask instead: would knowing the answer change what I do next? If yes, it's time. If you'd behave identically either way, you can wait.

In practice, most people reach that point somewhere between six and twelve weeks of regular dating.

Set it up well

  • In person or on a call, not over text if you can help it.
  • Not immediately after sex, and not during an argument.
  • At the start of a conversation, not on the doorstep as they leave.

What to actually say

'I've really enjoyed the last couple of months. I want to be honest — I'm looking for a serious relationship, and I'd like that with you. Where are you at?'

That's the whole script. It's a statement about you, followed by one open question. No case-building, no list of evidence.

If you're nervous

Write the two sentences down and read them once before you see them. Rehearsing reduces the odds of softening it into a hint.

How to handle each answer

  • Yes: agree what changes practically — how often you see each other, meeting friends, the apps.
  • No: believe it. A clear no is a gift, even when it hurts.
  • 'I need time': fine, once. Agree a rough timeframe, then hold it.

Key takeaways

  • Ask when the answer would change your behaviour.
  • Two sentences: what you want, then one open question.
  • A deferral without a timeframe usually functions as a no.

Healthy Communication in Relationships

Good communication isn't about phrasing. It's about whether both people can raise a problem and still be on the same side afterwards.
